By: LEONARDO BLAIR In defiance of nature and centuries of accepted wisdom, scientists from a leading university in the United Kingdom unveiled new research on Tuesday suggesting that in the distant future two men could come together to make a baby and eliminate the need for eggs from women. Department of Biology & Biochemistry scientists at the University of Bath announced that they have developed a method of injecting mouse parthenogenotes with sperm that allows them to become healthy baby mice with a success rate of up to 24 percent.

There is always lots of speculation as to what the "Mark" of the beast will be. It has been stated that everything from the barcode to rfid was the mark. The truth is, we will not know what it is until it actually happens. Chances are it is something supernatural rather than mechanical or technological. But it is more than likely not anything we have currently seen. That being said, this is something that could very well be a forerunner to what the mark could be. Source: Daily Mail Online

By: ROB STEIN A handful of scientists around the United States are trying to do something that some people find disturbing: make embryos that are part human, part animal. The researchers hope these embryos, known as chimeras, could eventually help save the lives of people with a wide range of diseases. One way would be to use chimera embryos to create better animal models to study how human diseases happen and how they progress. Perhaps the boldest hope is to create farm animals that have human organs that could be transplanted into terminally ill patients. Source: Associated Press
RENO, Nev. — On a farm about six miles outside this gambling town, Jason Chamberlain looks over a flock of about 50 smelly sheep, many of them possessing partially human livers, hearts, brains and other organs. The University of Nevada-Reno researcher talks matter-of-factly about his plans to euthanize one of the pregnant sheep in a nearby lab. He can’t wait to examine the effects of the human cells he had injected into the fetus’ brain about two months ago. “It’s mice on a large scale,” Chamberlain says with a shrug. As strange as his work may sound, it falls firmly within the new ethics guidelines the influential National Academies issued this past week for stem cell research. In fact, the Academies’ report endorses research that co-mingles human and animal tissue as vital to ensuring that experimental drugs and new tissue replacement therapies are safe for people. Doctors have transplanted pig valves into human hearts for years, and scientists have injected human cells into lab animals for even longer. Biological mixing of species But the biological co-mingling of animal and human is now evolving into even more exotic and unsettling mixes of species, evoking the Greek myth of the monstrous chimera, which was part lion, part goat and part serpent. In the past two years, scientists have created pigs with human blood, fused rabbit eggs with human DNA and injected human stem cells to make paralyzed mice walk. A new telekinetic app operates with Google Glass to harness the power of the mind in order to control functions. MindRDR, developed by British firm This Place, links Google Glass with another piece of attachable hardware, the Neurosky EEG biosensor, that picks up brainwaves, which the app then translates into action. A function is carried out based on the amount of concentration and relaxation by the user. Thus far, MindRDR, available at GitHub from Thursday, is limited to taking photos and sharing them on social media outlets. The app takes brainwaves measured by the biosensor and superimposes a meter reading on Google Glass’s camera view. As the user focuses more on the desired task, the meter rises in the Glass view, and the app snaps a photograph. Focus more, the meter goes up again and the photo is posted on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Researchers have managed to erase and then restore lost memory in genetically modified rats with a flash of light. The study by researchers from University of California in San Diego, published in Nature journal , is the first cause-and-effect evidence that strengthening or weakening connections between neurons in the brain can influence particular memories. “We can form a memory, erase that memory and we can reactivate it, at will, by applying a stimulus that selectively strengthens or weakens synaptic connections,” study senior researcher Dr. Roberto Malinow, a professor of neurosciences said in a university press release. "Until recently, most robots were carefully separated from humans. They have largely been used in factories to perform repetitive tasks that required speed, precision and force. That generation of robots is dangerous, and they have been caged and fenced for the protection of workers. But the industrial era of robotics is over. And robots are beginning to move around in the world." |
